United Methodist Women (UMW)
The United Methodist Women (UMW) is the largest denominational faith organization for women with approximately 800,000 members whose mission is fostering spiritual growth, developing leaders and advocating for justice. Members around the globe raise up to $20 million each year for programs and projects related to women, children and youth in the United States and in more than 100 countries around the world.
United Methodist Women inherits the vision and toil of women's missionary societies of eight denominations since 1869 when it began with 6 members. Its 140-year legacy started when the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society first organized in Boston in response to a lack of women's health in India.
Each first Monday at Southside and on some Tuesday evenings, this group gathers in small groups (circles) to support each other in spiritual growth, mission projects and advocating for others. Projects are varied from collecting food for UCOM, collecting labels and coupons for non-profit groups, donating school supplies for needy children, and denying themselves to save for missions. It is the faith and consistency of giving that has provided thousands of missionaries (at home and abroad) over the years the support they need to share the love of Christ.
From its beginning, United Methodist Women has focused on ministries with women, children, and youth. It is our way of preparing for the future. You can find out more information at http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umw/ or call Katie Woodbury, 683-5898, or Anne Davis, 614-4823, to see how you can help in this great Christian work. Come and join us. There is something for everyone.
