What is Solace?

Solace For The Children is an organization of volunteers that provides medical and dental care to needy children. Through a 6-week summer hosting program, children from Afghanistan come to the United States and stay with American families while they receive treatment. The cost of bringing the children here is covered by sponsoring churches or other groups in the area. The local medical community donates their services to treat these special children.  (Download a Summer Hosting Application at the bottom of this page.)

The Mission:

Solace For The Children is committed to demonstrating God's love by providing medical and dental care to children in need. Realizing that many children worldwide are at risk due to health, environmental and political issues, Solace For The Children provides a framework of opportunity for ecumenical mission efforts.

Want to Host a Child from Afghanistan in your home?

Hosting one of these children is a life-changing experience, but the effects reach beyond individual homes. Friendships develop between Afghan children of different ethnicities, host families from different churches, Afghan and American families, and local volunteers. These relationships are the beginning of a foundation for lasting peace between Americans and Afghans, one person at a time.

The Solace History with SUMC

This Fall, SUMC was able to serve as host church for two Afghan girls, Moska and Fakhria,  as part of the Solace for the Children "Extended Program" that arranges treatment for children with more serious medical needs.  This care is a separate program from the Summer Hosting Program but did provide us with a wonderful opportunity.  Through our experience with Moska and Fakhria, we were able to get a glimpse into the amazing opportunity God has in store for us to be part of the Summer Program.

SUMC is the Host Church for the 2010 Solace Summer Program in Jacksonville!

SUMC will serve as the Summer Host Church for the Jacksonville Branch of Solace for the Children and bring 10-15 children here for 6-weeks beginning June 1, 2010.  These children will have minor medical needs addressed - such as minor dental work or needing new glasses.  They will get to know one another as many are from warring Afghan tribes.  They will learn to call Americans "friend" and experience God's love through the care of host families.  And surely, they will teach us much more!

What can you do to help?

  • Supplies & Donations: Click here for a full list of supplies we are collecting.
  • Planning: Much work still has to be done to bring this calling to fruition but prayerful planning, organizing and fundraising is enthusiastically underway.
  • Host Families: Potential host families are invited to prayerfully consider this opportunity and if called, print and complete the application by March 15th
  • Host Gandparents: We will be pairing "Host Grandparents" with each Host Family to provide prayer support, encouragement and an added pair of loving arms to welcome each Afghan child to Jacksonville.
  • Party Planning: Once a week outings and activities will be planned and hosted by a separate team of families that will provide opportunities for other American children to give back by inviting the Afghan children and host family children to play, learn and fellowship.
  • Financial Support: Financial sponsors are needed for each child as it costs about $3000 per child for application, Visa, passport and travel needs.
  • Medical, Dental & Optical Services: Contacts need to be made for dental, optical and medical screenings and minor care to be donated.  And of course, we need a prayer team to help provide the most valuable support!

All interested volunteers are asked to contact Angie Cosper if you would like to serve as part of this mission in one of many large and small ways available.

Look for our plans, contact me if you want to help and pray along with us for God's guidance for this undertaking.
